BACKGROUND: From 2147, where the US is now called Panem and is controlled by the people in the Capitol. Each year, children from the ages of 11-17 are picked to fight to the death as a tribute for rebellion 75 years ago. Johanna was one of those kids. She won.
PERSONALITY: Whoever Johanna was before the Games disappeared the day she was reaped. You don't win the Games, you survive them. From that moment on, she had to be someone else to survive. She is now an exposed nerve, she is unfiltered, she doesn’t care. She’s angry and vindictive. The world owes her. She knows for a fact that the arena messed them all up good, and she's embracing her new outlook on life. There’s no going back now, you're forever changed. It was just another part of growing up for her. And now you have to get on with your life-- maybe just as desperately as she did in the Games.
When the war started, Johanna was willing to give herself to the rebellion. She told her allies in the in her second Games that “They can't hurt me. I'm not like the rest of you. There's no one left I love.” Knowing there’s nothing left for her, Johanna made the perfect rebel. Nothing to lose.
She doesn’t censor her thoughts, she easily told Katniss she was jealous of Peeta and Prim. And that she was kind of disgusted by the fact that Katniss was actually a good person and not faking it for the cameras. Maybe because she doesn’t think she’s a good person anymore. One that deserves anything good. That’s what the arena does to you-- celebrates the horrible things you do-- good people don’t win. Part of her wishes she could be more like Katniss, she secretly admires the other girl. Katniss was brave and loved her sister so dearly she volunteered to go into the Games. Johanna hated the Capitol so much she got her own family killed. She only became part of the resistance because there was nothing left for her. There's a small part of her that loves Katniss-- really loves her. She's never met anyone like her-- someone so brave and selfless. She isn't sure if she wants to be her or wants her. Johanna has forgotten what it's like to love and confuses her feelings. She's hungry for scraps.
Johanna knows no one likes her-- she’s impatient and honest to the point of cruelty. But with that kind of honesty, you can probably trust her now. After her reaping, Johanna was good at lying. Lying and acting was what got her life saved. She only won her games by pretending she was weak and getting a low score. She ran away from the cornucopia and went into hiding, the trees being familiar and safe. And then in the end, when only a few tributes were left, Johanna dropped them all swiftly. Her weapon of choice being an axe-- as her district’s industry was lumber. She had the wherewithal to kill all along. She just didn't want it to be too many.
After being tortured by the Capitol for secrets with Peeta, Johanna developed a fear of water. She was doused and shocked several times. This makes it difficult for her to bathe or tolerate rainstorms. Even after all this time, Johanna will not swim or take baths. Her showers are short and usually she decides to sponge bathe. She doesn't like to show weakness, and doesn't let anyone know. Despite this, she will get fidgety during a rainstorm and demand to be entertained. It shows at the seams. Johanna is fit to burst. She has so much to give but keeps it locked away.
Johanna is familiar with Peeta's screams from the Capitol's torture. It makes her feel closer to him, hearing him at his most raw. Neither of them gave up secrets. Johanna is loyal, once you have her, you really have her forever. She may push people away but she only does it for what she thinks is their own good. No one should have a friend like her. Her friends are the only ones who know what it's like to be in there, and they're the only people she feels she can trust. Everyone else sees her harsh and cold, a killer.
POWERS/ABILITIES: nothing superhuman. Proficient in throwing axes, wrestling, creating things with woodworking tools, and making maps.
